As part of ChicoBag's™ mission to help humanity kick the single-use bag habit, we support efforts around the country to implement policies that limit single-use bags. When we heard that Seattle would be voting on a first in the nation grocery bag fee, we sent our Advocacy and Community Partnerships representative up to Washington to testify in favor of the Green Fee before the Seattle City Council.
We also made a donation of 500 bags to the Cherry St. Food Bank which is owned and operated by a unique nonprofit, Northwest Harvest. Northwest Harvest has taken a proactive approach to the problem of plastic bags by developing a, "Bag it Better" program. They previously purchased plastic bags that were used to provide food to their clients, but they were eager to find a way to save money and make their service more environmentally friendly. They put a simple ad up on craigslist.org requesting donations of reusable cloth bags and the response so far has been overwhelming.
They have since collected hundreds of bags that can be used in their donation program. Their goal is to get enough bags and create a behavior change among their clients so that 80-90% of folks receiving food from the food bank will be carrying it in reusable bags.
The Bag Monster® also made a visit to the food bank, and helped fill ChicoBag™ brand reusable bags with food for Cherry St.'s clients. Northwest Harvest's staff got a kick out of the Bag Monster® and ended up borrowing a costume from us for a press conference they had planned regarding their "Bag it Better" program and ended up receiving a good amount of media attention.
"On behalf of all of us at Northwest Harvest, thanks so much for the donation to our Bag it Better project and more. It was great meeting you and let's stay in touch for more Bag Monster adventures!"
