What Is rePETe and How It’s Giving Water Bottles a Second Chance at Life

As part of our Pledge for the Planet Commitment, we advocate for policies that limit single-use products and ultimately make the world a better, safer place. Specifically, we walk the talk through the seven key initiatives below.

Today, we dig a little deeper on #5, our  rePETe initiative, and how it’s using recycled materials to keep plastic out of our waterways.

Let’s jump in.

So, what is rePETe?

rePETe is a trademarked term we use for our exclusive product line made entirely from recycled materials. You can’t find them anywhere else!

What kind of recycled materials does rePETe item contain?
  • All ChicoBag rePETe products contain a portion of certifiedRepreve fabric, made from 100% post-consumer recycled plastic bottles.
  • Many products also have recycled components, like carabiners, cording, or cord locks.

Why is the name “rePETe” spelled and stylized this way?

Good question! “PET” (sometimes “PETE”) is the abbreviation for “polyethylene terephthalate,” aka the mostcommon type of single-use plastic used for products like bottled beverages, mouthwash, and salad dressing containers. It’s fortunately very easy to recycle into fiber for our reusable bags. Since we’re giving these bottles a repeat round in life, we thought “rePETe” was a pretty clever play on words!

Why is rePETe such an important initiative for ChicoBag and To-Go Ware?
  • Reduces carbon emissions.Studies from our2019 Impact Report show our rePETe products create 31% fewer carbon emissions than their brand-new virgin polyester equivalents.
  • Helps close the loop on manufacturing processes. This means we use recycled materials to create new components for our products--AND that these products can be recycled at the end of their lifetime. Talk about sustainability!
  • Gives back to the planet. 1% of annual sales from the rePETe line goes to the1% for the Planet movement to support environmental charities. Look for the 1% logo on all of our rePETe items!

What products are part of your rePETe line?

So glad you asked!. Here’s a complete list:

Do you have a materials list for each rePETe item?

Sure do! Transparency is important to us, and we want you to know exactly what goes into the product you are buying. You’ll find a handy-dandy printed materials list on the inside of each bag and/or the backside of each pouch.
